Each Lent, The Parish of Calvary St. George’s presents “The Muhlenberg Lenten Reflections.” This multi day event features lectures by acclaimed theologians, continuing the vision of William Augustus Muhlenberg, a 19th century clergyman and educator. As the rector of Holy Communion Church here in New York City, he was a pioneer in the liturgical movement of the Episcopal Church in the mid 1800’s, and was the first Episcopal priest to hold weekly Eucharist. He considered himself ‘evangelical and catholic,’ being devoted to Christ, the Scriptures, and to the shared faith of the historic universal church.

The Gospel in a Pluralist Society:

The Wisdom of Lesslie Newbigin for the Church Today This spring (2019), the Very Rev. Dr. Leander Harding, dean of The Cathedral of All Saints in Albany, New York, will deliver our Muhlenberg Lectures. TIME: March 14th-16th (Thursday – Saturday) | Weeknight talks are at 7pm; Saturday talk at 10am. LOCATION: St. George’s Chapel | 4 Rutherford Place (at E. 16st St.), New York, NY

In such a divided and pluralistic society as we have today, what word does the Christian Gospel speak?

Dr. Harding believes that the work and legacy of Lesslie Newbigin holds the key. Newbigin was a British missiologist, missionary, who worked extensively in India. He demonstrated that the church could not only survive, but thrive is such a pluralistic and religious landscape. Through an examination of Newbigin’s work and legacy, we’ll discover how the truth of the gospel has a unique place in our 21st Century western landscape. CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE YOUR TICKET NOW.
